Fancy making your own Cranberry Sauce this Christmas and for many years to come? With this amazing self-fertile, evergreen shrub - you can!
This variety is actually a lingonberry which reliably produce fruit in the UK climate. Unlike the big fruited American cranberry. You get more fruits per plant but they are slightly smaller but also have a thinner skin making them less chewy in sauces.
A low growing, hardy plant - latin name Vaccinium Fireballs - would make a wonderfully unusual addition to any outdoor space. With clusters of white, bell shaped flowers from summer to winter transforming into masses of brilliant red fruits that provides interest all year round and there is nothing like picking your own fruits. The fruits will hold well on the plant so there is no mad rush to pick them all in one go and it is also self-fertile so no need to buy multiple plants although it is tempting!
We’re also sending you a decorative, festive pot in which to place your Vaccinium to enhance your wonderful indoor Christmas display.
When planting into the garden use acidic Ericaceous compost or in some soils use Sulphur Soil granules that can be used to maintain the required PH in your soil. Both of these are available on our website as well as ericaceous compost if planting up into the pot.
Tip - pick fruits regularly which encourages more flowers and fruit. Place fruits in the freezer until you have enough for sauce. Simply boil as you would when making jam, add sugar to taste and test for jam set.
