Cornus controversa Variegata
A wonderful, variegated, deciduous shrub growing in horizontal layers, hence its common name 'Wedding Cake Tree'. Recognised as a fabulous shrub as awarded the RHS Award of Garden Merit. Not only does this Cornus have delightful, variegated light green leaves with cream edging, it produces pretty tiny white flowers in the Summer for added interest which form in clusters at the end of the branches. The foliage will transform into rich, darker shades during the Autumn before they fall and the power is then directed into producing the buds for the following Spring. This versatile shrub will grow quite happily in a planter as a focal point and this will slow down the growth (this Cornus can grow up to 8 metres but this would take a few decades!). Simply prune off any dead or damaged branches in late Winter and feed twice a year with a slow release fertiliser.
