Grow Your Own: Easy Fruit & Veg Gardening for a Delicious Summer Harvest
When I was a little girl my grandparents had two allotments side by side. One was full of the most wonderful flowers which they used to make gorgeous arrangements from. The other was dedicated to fruit and veg.
I remember spending many a happy hour wandering around that veg patch, picking juicy berries, sweet tomatoes or shiny apples. Grannie would send me off with a basket to fill for whatever pie or crumble she was baking but I have to say, I don’t think I was much assistance…..most of those tasty crops got eaten way before they ever made it home!
There is nothing quite as satisfying as growing your own fruit and veg. Not only does it taste infinitely better than the shop-bought version, packed full of vitamins and nutrients, but I find it’s nourishing for the soul too. There’s something so pleasing about knowing you’ve had a hand in nurturing and tending to the plants that have created such a scrumptious harvest.
Fast-forward 40 years from those sunny afternoons spent on the allotment, I find it so much easier to persuade my own family to eat up their greens when they’ve come straight from our garden, and they too have been known to have an impromptu garden picnic after wandering past the strawberry patch or the pear tree!
With modern breeding techniques it is also so much easier to grow your own crops. With greater disease resistant, extended harvests periods, self-fertile varieties and trees being grafted onto dwarfing rootstock, edible gardening has become so much easier with guaranteed results and reduced space requirements. You can now grow many of your favourite fruit and veg on the patio or balcony in pots and containers!
