The butterfly bush.
Dark purple, scented, panicles which are produced prolifically during summer and are loved by butterflies for their rich nectar. Prune off faded blooms to encourage more.
The flowers are produced on the new growth so for a vigorous plant it is easy to keep in check by pruning to 30cm from the ground each spring. Its silvery green foliage is the perfect backdrop for its dark blooms.
Buddleia will grow anywhere that is light and in free draining soil including thriving in exposed conditions too.
