What a summertime beauty known as the Californian Lilac.

This evergreen shrub has glossy ovate shaped leaves all along its young green stemmed branches. In late spring to early summer tiny dark blue flowers in thumb sized clusters will appear in abundance all over the canopy. Each one on its own stem displaying proud of the foliage. The lightly scented blooms are loved by pollinating insects.

Ceanothus make great wall shrubs as well as rounded border shrubs and are easy care plants that need a sunny free from cold wind site where it will thrive even in poor soils.

Simply prune immediately after flowering any unwanted growth and pruning with shears across the foliage is ideal.

What This Plant Brings to Your Garden

Honey scent by the wall

The mid-blue flowers carry a soft honeyed scent that drifts on warm spring air, most noticeable when the shrub is trained near a wall or doorway.

A magnet for bees

Bees and butterflies gather at the large flower clusters, among the biggest borne by any blue Californian lilac you can grow in Britain.

RHS award, Cornish origin

Holds the RHS Award of Garden Merit and was raised at Trewithen garden in Cornwall, a name it has carried ever since.

About This Plant

This selection was raised at Trewithen garden near Grampound in Cornwall, taken from Ceanothus arboreus, a species of California's coastal islands. It grows with real vigour, throwing out long green stems clothed in broad, glossy leaves and producing the largest flower clusters of any blue Californian lilac.

Cold wind is its main enemy, so training against a warm wall suits it well. Prune once flowering has finished, running shears lightly over the surface to keep the shape tidy. Cutting back into bare old wood rarely works, so limit any trimming to younger growth.
