The Unsung Heroes of Winter: Hardworking Evergreens

The Unsung Heroes of Winter: Hardworking Evergreens

Ken and I were wandering around the garden the other afternoon whilst the sunshine was out, admiring the Winter bedding and checking to see if there were any signs of life from our Snowdrops yet – our neighbours are always out first and, if I’m honest, we are always a little envious of this fact, when we got to thinking how unappreciated those hard working evergreens are.

We are lucky, our garden is full of evergreens so there is always some greenery to
admire. But I’m not sure we always give them the credit that they deserve. Whilst
the other plants in the garden get to have a little snooze during the Winter months
and into early Spring, the evergreen shrubs keep going, bringing those lovely green
hues to the garden and, more importantly, keeping our faith going in the fact that the
garden will soon be a mass of colour and activity again.

Not only do they work so hard with their lovely, lush foliage, but there are a great
many that will give you a beautiful floral display this time of year too. Lifting our
hearts, putting a smile on our faces and providing a much-needed source of nectar
for those earlier pollinators. A great many will also have a wonderful fragrance
too……they really do work hard whilst their bed fellows are napping!

One of my favourites is Sarcococca, with its feathery flowers, glossy foliage and
sweet, sweet fragrance that you often notice before you even spot the blooms!

DEAL - Sarcococca Purple Gem (4.5 Litre) with 30cm Duck Egg Blue Capri Planter: Was £43 NOW £22!

I also love Viburnum Tinus. The enthusiasm this plant displays from Autumn right
through to late Spring is an absolute inspiration and, I believe, beyond compare!
The pretty deep pink buds appear in Autumn which open to white flowers through the Winter months and into the Spring. If all of this wasn’t enough, flowers are followed by deep blue/black berries that are loved by the birds! If there were a category in the Winter Olympics for Evergreen Shrubs then surely Viburnum Tinus would win the Gold!

DEAL - Viburnum tinus Eve Price (4.5 Litre) with FREE Bythorn Planter - Was £46.50 NOW £24!!!

Both are perfect in pots on the patio or by the door so if you feel you might have a
little spot to give one a home and enjoy their seasonal displays we’ve got great offers
on both at the moment!
