Glossy evergreen foliage and yellow blooms.

Mahonia Cabaret has glossy, holly-like foliage which is a rich green colour with new leaves flushed red.

From August to November orange red buds open to yellow flowers and are often followed by blue-grey berries. A great shrub for pollinating insects.

This fully hardy plant will grow well in sun or shade and holds the RHS Award of Garden Merit for outstanding garden performance.

Supplied as 1 x 3 ltr shrub

What This Plant Brings to Your Garden

Autumn nectar bar

Yellow flowers open from orange-red buds in late summer and autumn, feeding bees and hoverflies when most other nectar has run dry.

Green through winter

Glossy, holly-shaped leaves hold their rich green right through winter, with new growth flushed red, keeping the border furnished in the off season.

RHS award holder

It holds the RHS Award of Garden Merit, recognition earned through trial for dependable behaviour and good garden value.

About This Plant

Mahonia nitens grows wild in China, and Cabaret is a compact selection of it protected by plant breeders' rights. The pinnate, spined leaves sit in bold ruffs along upright stems. After the flowers fade, small blue-grey berries often follow, giving a second point of interest later in the season.

This is an easy shrub to keep. It needs little pruning, though old stems can be shortened in spring to keep it bushy. A mulch of compost each spring suits it, and it takes drier shade under trees where many flowering shrubs would sulk.
