An architectural treat for the garden.

This frost hardy Phormium which has large strap like leaves striped in rose pink, bronze and green - looking stunning all year round.

In a hot summer a thick spike will arise from the centre of the plant which carries lots of yellow green airy flowers. You can be sure of a great garden plant when it carries the RHS Award of Garden Merit.

Perfect in containers and borders Phormiums may require protection in particularly wet and cold winters especially in the north of the country but if planted in free draining soil it should be fine.

No pruning required simply remove any faded leaves at the base and cut of any flower stems after flowering.

What This Plant Brings to Your Garden

An RHS award holder

Sundowner carries the RHS Award of Garden Merit, singled out as one of the most dependable of all the coloured New Zealand flaxes.

Stripes of a sunset

Broad, upright leaves are striped rose pink, bronze and green, and the colouring holds through all twelve months of the year.

A bonus of summer flowers

After a hot summer a tall spike of airy, yellow-green flowers can rise from the clump, drawing bees while it lasts.

About This Plant

Raised in New Zealand, Sundowner is one of the hybrid flaxes that owe their scale and upright bearing to Phormium tenax, the swamp flax whose fibre once supported a whole export trade. The name suits it, the bronze and rose-pink striping catching low evening light in the colours of a fading sky.

Free drainage does more for this plant than any feeding regime. On heavy soil, work in plenty of grit before planting, and in colder or wetter districts give the crown a dry mulch through prolonged winter spells. Faded leaves pull away cleanly at the base, and spent flower stems cut out once they brown.
