A striking architectural plant perfect for creating a focal point in either beds and border or a large container.

Giving a tropical feel to the garden, Phormium Yellow Waves bears long, strappy leaves which can measure up to 100cm when mature! The green foliage is stripped cream, yellow and lime. With maturity plants can bear tubular red flower spikes in Summer.

Drought tolerant and also tolerant to salt. Plants are not fully hardy. Free draining soil and avoiding prolonged periods of frost should be enough. I've had one planted in my own Cambridgeshire garden for 10 years without any issue or protection.

What This Plant Brings to Your Garden

Happy in coastal gardens

Salt-laden wind does little harm to this tough New Zealander, making it a dependable choice for seaside borders where tender shrubs scorch and fail.

Sunshine in leaf form

Arching metre-long blades striped bright yellow and lime bring a warm tropical glow to borders and big pots, lifting dull corners in every season.

An RHS favourite

This variety holds the RHS Award of Garden Merit, granted only to plants that prove dependable and easy in trials across British gardens.

About This Plant

Both wild flaxes of New Zealand stand behind Yellow Wave, a garden hybrid selected for its relaxed, arching habit. Clumps broaden steadily over the years, and the low sweep of the leaves gives a softer outline than the stiffly upright forms of the genus, moving and rustling in the slightest breeze.

A plant in the nursery owner's own Cambridgeshire garden has come through ten winters without protection, though free drainage matters more than temperature. Give it gritty, open soil, comb out any tattered leaves in spring, and it asks for nothing else through the year.
