The butterfly bush.
Dark purple, scented, panicles which are produced prolifically during summer and are loved by butterflies for their rich nectar. Prune off faded blooms to encourage more.
The flowers are produced on the new growth so for a vigorous plant it is easy to keep in check by pruning to 30cm from the ground each spring. Its silvery green foliage is the perfect backdrop for its dark blooms.
Buddleia will grow anywhere that is light and in free draining soil including thriving in exposed conditions too.

What This Plant Brings to Your Garden

Butterfly magnet

The nectar-rich purple panicles pull in butterflies through summer, along with bees and day-flying moths, earning the shrub its common name of butterfly bush.

Deepest purple flowers

Black Knight carries some of the darkest, near-blackcurrant purple flowers of any butterfly bush, set against silvery green foliage that sets off the colour.

RHS award winner

The variety holds the RHS Award of Garden Merit, a mark of reliable garden performance backed by decades of popularity in British gardens.

About This Plant

Black Knight is a long-established cultivar of Buddleja davidii, a species that grows wild on rocky ground and riverbanks in China. It is a fast, vigorous shrub with arching stems, and the scented flower spikes open from the tips of growth made in the same season.

Because it flowers on new growth, cut the whole plant back hard to around thirty centimetres each spring, which keeps it compact and free-flowering. Snipping off faded spikes through summer draws out more blooms and limits self-seeding. It copes with poor, free-draining ground and open, windy sites.
