Hoeny scented red/purple panicles of bloom.

This fabulous Buddleia is a beauty to behold in the garden with its extra long panicles of richly coloured red/purple blooms that bears a delicious sweet honey scent.

An RHS Award of Garden Merit winning variety - its easy to see why this plant is held in such high regard.

Flowering from July through to October each year, the panicles of flower can reach up to 50cm in length if shrubs are pruned back hard each March.

As you would expect from a Butterfly Bush, this Buddelia is loved by the butterflies and bees.

A fully hardy, deciduous shrub, the leaves taken on a golden yellow tone in Autumn before being shed for the Winter.

What This Plant Brings to Your Garden

Sweet honey scent

The long red-purple flower spikes give off a sweet honey fragrance that carries on warm air, noticeable from a few paces down the garden.

Extra-long flower spikes

Pruned hard in spring, the panicles can reach up to fifty centimetres, giving big spires of red-purple colour that run late into autumn.

Bees and butterflies

As a butterfly bush it draws butterflies and bees to its nectar right through the second half of summer, when many other shrubs have finished.

About This Plant

Gardeners grow Royal Red for the depth of its colour, a selection of the Chinese species Buddleja davidii. It grows quickly into a deciduous shrub, and as the flowering season closes the lance-shaped leaves take on a golden yellow tone before they drop for winter.

Hard pruning is the one job that matters. Cut it back close to the base in March and the plant responds with vigorous fresh stems from the base. It asks only for a sunny position and free-draining soil, and shrugs off dry spells once its roots are down.
