Light blue flowers loved by the bees.

Californian Lilacs are always a welcome addition to the garden and Ceanothus Victoria is no exception.

A dense and compact evergreen shrub, Victoria bears masses of light blue flowers in Spring and early Summer. The flowers attract bees, butterflies and other pollinators to the garden and are lightly fragranced too.

The foliage on this hardy shrub is small and wrinkled adding extra texture and interest.

Tough, fully hardy and drought tolerant - simply prune to shape after flowering for many years of garden pleasure.

What This Plant Brings to Your Garden

Among the hardiest lilacs

Reckoned one of the toughest Californian lilacs, Victoria shrugs off cold that sees other varieties struggle, keeping dense evergreen cover through the winter.

Feeds spring pollinators

Bees, butterflies and other pollinating insects feed at the lightly scented light blue flowers, drawn to the mass of colour they make.

Copes with summer drought

Once its roots take hold it manages dry spells and poor ground with ease, needing barely any watering through the summer.

About This Plant

Victoria takes its name from the city on Vancouver Island and counts as one of the hardiest Californian lilacs in cultivation, a useful trait in colder British gardens. The small deep green leaves are slightly wrinkled, a texture that catches the light and gives the dense growth extra interest.

It dislikes being moved once settled, so choose its home with care at planting time. Watering matters mainly in the first year or two, after which the shrub handles dry spells on its own. Trim to shape when the flowers have gone over, keeping the cuts within younger, leafy growth.
