Paper-like white blooms.

Also known as the Florentine Rock Rose, Cistus florentinus is a fully hardy, compact evergreen shrub that will create a wonderful display in the summer garden each year.

Attractive sage coloured foliage is held on the plant all year but can be barely visible during the months of June and July when the shrub bursts into flower bearing absolutely masses of vibrant white blooms with a golden yellow centre that shines out brightly.

The saucer shaped flowers have a crumpled appearance reminiscent of tissue paper.

Cistus is ideal for a sunny spot in the garden and will happily tolerate poorer soils, coastal locations and is both wind and drought tolerant once established.

What This Plant Brings to Your Garden

Sage-green all year

Narrow sage-toned leaves hold their colour through every month, giving quiet structure at the front of a border long after summer ends.

Built for tough spots

Salt spray, drying wind and thin stony soil barely register once roots are down, so it suits exposed coastal and gravel gardens.

Masses of summer flowers

Crumpled white saucers with a golden central eye smother the sage foliage in midsummer, each petal as thin as tissue paper.

About This Plant

Florentinus arose in the wild as a natural cross between two Mediterranean species, the Montpelier and sage-leaved rock roses, and takes its name from Florence, where it was first recorded. On warm days the foliage gives off a faint resinous scent, a reminder of the sun-baked slopes its parents call home.

Every bloom is spent by evening, but a fresh crop opens each morning through the season, so there is no deadheading to keep up with. The jobs that matter are few: plant into gritty, unimproved ground, trim only lightly after flowering, and keep the secateurs well away from old bare wood.
