What This Plant Brings to Your Garden

Scent through winter

Through the coldest months clusters of lemon-yellow flowers give off a sweet fragrance that carries several feet on a still, mild day.

Flowers in the lean months

Winter-flowering shrubs are scarce, and this one opens waves of pea-like blooms from the darkest weeks right through into spring.

Evergreen all year

The fine blue-green leaves stay on the plant all year, giving a soft, glaucous backdrop in the border and holding shape through winter.

About This Plant

Citrina belongs to Coronilla valentina subspecies glauca, a small shrub from the Mediterranean where it grows on rocky, sun-baked ground. The soft lemon shade of its flowers is gentler than the deeper yellow of the species, and the ferny blue-green leaves keep the plant looking furnished even when it pauses between flushes.

Good drainage matters more than anything, since the roots rot in wet winter soil, so plant it in a warm, free-draining spot or a gritty container. A light trim after the main flowering keeps it bushy and stops it growing leggy. In a container use a loam-based compost with added grit.
