Year round interest in the garden.

A slow growing, evergreen shrub, Osmanthus Goshiki offers year round interest in the garden from fabulous foliage to fragrant flowers.

The holly-like leaves are variegated cream and green, with new leaves starting with a pink flush.

Small white flowers appear in Summer and whilst they may be small in size, they pack a real punch with their jasmine like perfume.

Reaching around 150cm height and spread, grow in beds and borders or pots and containers, positioning in full sun or partial shade.

What This Plant Brings to Your Garden

Five colours in one shrub

Goshiki means five colours in Japanese, and the holly-like leaves show why, opening pink before settling into cream, gold and green variegation.

Jasmine-like perfume

Tiny white flowers tucked among the leaves in late summer release a fragrance out of all proportion to their size, carrying well on warm evenings.

Screening that looks after itself

Dense, slow growth makes a tidy evergreen screen or container specimen that rarely needs the secateurs and stays bright in the depths of winter.

About This Plant

Osmanthus heterophyllus grows wild in the mountain woodland of Japan, where it has long been planted around temples and gardens. Goshiki, its most colourful form, keeps the spiny, holly-like juvenile foliage of the species; on old plants the leaves gradually smooth out, a quirk it shares with true hollies.

Growth is unhurried, so buy close to the size you want rather than waiting years for it to catch up. Beyond that it asks little: shelter from the coldest winds while young, water in dry spells for the first season or two, and a light trim in spring only if you want a formal outline.
