A clump forming evergreen grass known as the Chinese Fountain grass.

Lush green slender arching foliage in spring and summer fades to yellow and then brown in winter which is attractive all year round in the border or containers.

In late summer to autumn silvery, purple tinged bottle brush like plumes appear on sturdy stems which sway in a gentle breeze looking stunning with frosty cobwebs too.

During late autumn its green leaves and bottle brush blooms dry and remain looking stunning all through winter and into spring.

Preferring a sheltered spot with free draining soil and full sun this plant is hardy in coastal areas and most areas of the UK providing they are kept well drained.

Simply revitalise the foliage each spring by haircutting 5 - 10cm above ground level.

What This Plant Brings to Your Garden

RHS Award of Garden Merit

Hameln holds the RHS Award of Garden Merit, given after trials for reliable garden performance among fountain grasses.

Seed heads feed birds

Bottle-brush plumes dry and stand into winter, and finches pick over the seed while the faded clumps shelter overwintering insects.

Copes with dry summers

Once its roots are down it shrugs off dry spells, suiting free-draining sunny borders and gravel plantings that bake in summer.

About This Plant

Hameln is a German selection of Pennisetum alopecuroides, a fountain grass whose wild relatives grow in the meadows of East Asia, and it carries the name of the town on the River Weser famous for the Pied Piper. Through the year it moves from fresh green growth to foaming plumes, then dries to parchment shades that hold through frost.

The single job that matters is the spring haircut. Cut the whole clump down to a hand's height in early spring, before new blades push through, and the plant renews itself completely. Winter wet is its main enemy, so work grit into heavier ground at planting and let the drainage do the rest.
