Add a touch of tropical to your garden with this fabulous strong and hardy yet exotic looking palm.

Phoenix canariensis is more commonly known as the Canary Island Date Palm and it will give your garden a relaxing, Mediterranean feel. An established palm which holds the prestigious RHS Award of Garden Merit due to its wonderful performance and reliability.

Growing to approximately 500cm in height and 300cm in spread if planted in the ground whilst keeping more compact in a container, only growing to approximately 150cm in height and 100cm spread. Ideal for growing in a sunny, sheltered position and tolerant to heat and drought adding structure and form to the garden.

Simply remove dead and damaged leaves from the base of the trunk in Spring and give a little protection below 2 in exposed areas. Key is to not allow water to freeze where the leaves meet the trunk and to ensure the roots are not saturated.

Supplied as 1 Phoenix canariensis Palm in a 2 litre pot approx 50cm high

What This Plant Brings to Your Garden

RHS Award of Garden Merit

The Canary Island date palm holds the RHS Award of Garden Merit, given to plants judged reliable, available and excellent in ordinary gardens.

Built for heat and drought

Native to the semi-arid Canary Islands, it takes hot summers, dry spells and salt-laden coastal wind in its stride once established.

Year-round tropical structure

Long, arching feather fronds keep their presence through every season, giving a patio pot or sunny corner an instant Mediterranean air.

About This Plant

Every one of the seven Canary Islands has wild populations of this palm, growing from humid slopes below the cloud forest down to dry coastal hills, which goes a long way to explaining its toughness. Mature specimens develop the classic patterned trunk, each diamond-shaped scar marking where an old frond once grew.

Winter wet is a greater threat here than cold on its own. Keep the roots on the dry side from autumn onwards and never let water sit and freeze in the crown where the fronds meet the trunk. In spring, simply trim away tired lower leaves and the palm gets going again.
