Uncomplicated yet charmingly crinkled.

This easy going evergreen has leathery leaves full of character with lighter coloured new growth and wonderfully rippled edges which darken in colour with maturity.

Scented tiny purple flowers open in late Spring/early Summer along the stems of this hardy shrub and it is perfectly happy in any soil, even in coastal areas. Pittosporum are versatile and can be planted in a pot, garden border or used to create a hedge or screen.

Remove any dead or damaged stems each year after flowering and snip off any crossing stems to allow air to circulate through the plant.

What This Plant Brings to Your Garden

Evening honey scent

Tiny purple flowers open along the stems in late spring and release a honey fragrance after dusk that drifts across a still garden.

Golden evergreen foliage

Crinkled gold-green leaves stay on the plant all year and cut well for the vase, holding their colour in mixed foliage arrangements.

Copes by the coast

This kohuhu takes salt wind and poor soil in its stride, thriving in exposed coastal gardens where less tolerant evergreens fail.

About This Plant

Pittosporum tenuifolium is a New Zealand evergreen the Maori call kohuhu, and Abbotsbury Gold takes its name from the subtropical gardens at Abbotsbury in Dorset where it was raised. Its near-black twigs set off the pale gold foliage, with the newest growth opening lightest before darkening as the leaves firm up.

Give it a yearly tidy once flowering finishes: take out any dead or damaged shoots, and snip away stems that cross the centre so air can move freely through the plant. That light attention keeps growth dense, whether you are growing it as a specimen, in a pot or as a clipped screen.
