Unusual evergreen shrub adding great structure to the garden and growing naturally in a ball shape for easy gardening and maintenance.

Why not use this wonderful, evergreen, variegated shrub as a statement plant in a container with its green/grey leaves and white/silver margin for all year round colour and interest with tiny, scented flowers in May-June as an added bonus.

This incredibly hardy and tolerant plant is easy to care for with a light prune in late Winter/early Spring and would make a fantastic small hedge with its dense, rounded habit.

Supplied as an established plant in a 4.5 litre pot, this Pittosporum Silver Ball measures 25-30cm on receipt

What This Plant Brings to Your Garden

Honey-scented flowers

Small purple-brown flowers open across the shrub in May and June, carrying a honey fragrance that drifts on warm, still evenings.

Colour through winter

Grey-green leaves edged in white hold their colour right through winter, keeping the rounded shape furnished when deciduous shrubs stand bare.

Happy on chalk

Roots take well in chalk, loam or sandy ground, so it settles into free-draining beds where many broadleaved evergreens struggle to establish.

About This Plant

Pittosporum tenuifolium grows wild in New Zealand, where its Maori name tawhiwhi refers to the way its leaves shiver on the breeze. 'Silver Ball' is a compact variegated form, its cream-edged foliage carried on near-black stems that give florists a favourite backing green for cut arrangements.

Left alone it keeps a neat outline, so pruning means no more than a light tidy once flowering has finished. Grow it somewhere sheltered from cold drying winds, which can brown the leaf edges, and keep container specimens evenly watered through long dry spells.
