Foliage that looks like it should glow in the dark.

Senecio has wonderfully large silver foliage that is also soft to touch. Its downy surface is simply something you want to stroke. Just like a puppies ears!

An evergreen plant that likes free drained soil and will survive most UK winters outdoors. A clump forming plant which will cope with coastal salty conditions too.

Ensure it is free from damp wet soil in winter by planting in raised beds with good drainage or containers. Usually hardy to minus 10 degrees C.

What This Plant Brings to Your Garden

Broad silver foliage

The wide leaves wear a dense white felt that lifts a border all season and stands out against dark greens and deep flower colours.

Stands up to sea wind

Coming from windswept South American coasts, it takes salt spray and exposure in its stride, earning a place in seaside and gravel gardens.

Copes with drought

Once established it needs little water, drawing on its felted leaves to sail through dry sunny spells that leave thirstier plants wilting.

About This Plant

Angel Wings is a selected form of Senecio candicans, a coastal plant from the southern tip of South America where it grows on exposed shores in Argentina and Chile. It is grown for its foliage rather than its flowers, the broad leaves covered in a soft white down that begs to be touched.

Its weak point is winter wet rather than cold, since sodden soil rots the crown faster than frost harms it. Give it sharp drainage in a raised bed or a gritty container, and it will hold its leaves through most British winters down to around minus ten.
