A stunning foliage plant famed for its hugely tactile leaves.

Also known as 'Lambs ears' and its clear to see why! A low growing perennial producing grey-white soft and furry leaves. Fully hardy and drought tolerant, perfect for ground cover.

This particular variety of Stachys very rarely flowers but has the most striking silver foliage we know in a Stachys.

Growing to only around 20cm in height this plant is ideal for using in the front of borders. Please note that as this plant is a hardy perennial it is likely to die back a little in Winter before fresh growth re-emerges in the Spring

What This Plant Brings to Your Garden

Leaves like felt

Soft, woolly leaves in silver-grey feel like felt to the touch and hold their pale colour where brighter foliage would scorch in dry sun.

Thrives in dry ground

Once settled it copes with drought, dry banks and gravel gardens, spreading a low mat where thin, baked soil defeats thirstier plants.

Happy in baked spots

Reflected heat from paths and paving suits it well, so a hot, awkward strip that bakes all summer becomes an easy home for its silver mat.

About This Plant

Lamb's ears takes its name from foliage clothed in fine white hairs that beg to be stroked, and Silver Carpet is the form grown purely for that effect. It rarely puts up the flower spikes seen on other kinds of Stachys, so the low sheet of silver stays even and unbroken from spring onwards.

Through winter the mat can look tired and thin before fresh rosettes push up again, which is the moment to pull away any leaves that have gone soft or brown. Established clumps lift and divide readily at the same time, giving free plants for edging elsewhere. Water at the base, as wet hairs mark and rot.
