Glorious semi-evergreen grass to add year round interest to the garden.

Stipa Ponytails is a fully hardy ornamental grass that will add year round interest to your beds and borders, or try growing in pots and containers.

Bearing yellow/green foliage all year through and then throwing plumes of silvery-green flower in the Summer months this beautiful grass really does perform. The fluffy flowers add great movement into the garden as they blow gently in the breeze.

Low maintenance and fully hardy. Being semi-evergreen it may lose some of its foliage in the Winter months. To keep plants looking tidy comb through the foliage in Spring, wearing gloves, to remove any dead bits.

Supplied as 1 x 2 ltr plant

What This Plant Brings to Your Garden

Movement in the breeze

Silvery-green flower plumes rise through summer and catch every breath of wind, bringing soft movement and sound that stiffer border plants cannot.

Winter food for finches

As the plumes fade to buff, the seedheads become a winter larder for finches and other small birds working the border for food.

RHS Award of Garden Merit

An RHS Award of Garden Merit recognises it as a grass that performs dependably, standing through wind and dry spells without any staking.

About This Plant

This fine-leaved grass comes from the open grasslands of the southern United States and Mexico, which explains its ease in hot, dry ground. Blades of pale green arch into a soft fountain, and by high summer the whole plant turns hazy as its threadlike flowerheads open and ripen to straw.

The one seasonal task is a spring tidy. Run gloved hands through the clump to comb out the previous year's dead threads, since cutting it back hard can check the new growth. In a mild winter much of the foliage stays put, so hold off until you see fresh green pushing at the base.
