Structural plant ideal for cottage gardens with clusters of lilac purple blooms.

This much-loved perennial is an absolute must for a cottage garden themed border.

Tall, strucutral stems bear clusters of lilac purple coloured blooms from June through to September which are an absolute magnet to pollinating insects such as bees and butterflies.

A Plants2Gardens favourite, holding the presitgious RHS Award of Garden Merit, Verbena Bonariensis will flower year after year.

Cut back to the old growth in Spring when new shoots start to above. By leaving the old growth on over Winter this offers the plant some protection as it can be susceptible in particularly cold Winters or exposed spots.

Supplied as 1 x 2 Litre Plant

What This Plant Brings to Your Garden

A magnet for pollinators

The flat lilac flower heads draw in bees, butterflies and moths through summer, feeding them nectar well into September when many borders fade.

See-through structure

Tall, sparsely leafed stems let you plant it near the front of a border and still see through to whatever grows behind, a favourite trick in cottage schemes.

Award of Garden Merit

This vervain holds the RHS Award of Garden Merit and returns year after year, seeding gently around to fill gaps on its own.

About This Plant

Verbena bonariensis grows wild across Argentina and southern Brazil, where its wiry stems rise from a low clump of leaves. Gardeners have long valued that airy build, threading it through prairie plantings and cottage borders to add height without weight or shade.

Through the year it forms a modest rosette before the tall stems shoot up and branch into their flower heads. Leave the dead growth standing over winter, since it shelters the crown in hard weather, then cut back to the base in spring as new shoots appear below.
