The performance of this shortlisted Chelsea Plant of the Decade is truly amazing!

Often considered to be THE perennial wallflower, Bowles Mauve bears tall spires of purple, lightly scented flowers over many months, from February/March until September with evergreen, grey-green foliage adding to the attraction of this plant.

To get the maximum blooms, position your Bowles Mauve in a sunny spot but other than that, it is simple to grow, tolerating even the poorest of soils.

With the RHS Award of Garden Merit and appearing on the shortlist for Chelsea Plant of the Decade, Bowles Mauve has really made an impact with the professionals and here is your chance to grab an established 2 litre plant of your very own!

What This Plant Brings to Your Garden

Months of flower

Spires of mauve flowers open as early as February and keep coming into September, filling the long gap when little else in the border is in bloom.

Early insect food

The flowers are rich in nectar and pull in bees and butterflies, and because they open early they feed insects emerging on the first warm days of spring.

Thrives on poor soil

It performs on thin, poor and chalky soils where richer plants struggle, asking only for good drainage and a sunny, open position to flower at its best.

About This Plant

The name honours Edward Augustus Bowles, the celebrated plantsman whose garden at Myddelton House in Enfield gave many good plants their start. This wallflower flowers so hard and so long that it wears itself out, which is why it tends to be short-lived, lasting a few strong years before it needs replacing.

The grey-green foliage stays put through winter, giving the plant a bushy, woody-based shape. To stop it going leggy, trim the stems lightly once the main flush fades. Because plants are short-lived, it pays to root a few cuttings each summer as replacements, and to keep the roots off waterlogged ground.
