Large, fragrant, Magnolia like blooms.

Calycanthys Venus is a hardy deciduous shrub that bears large, highly fragrant blooms from May. The flowers are similar to those of Magnolia and are creamy white in colour with a burgundy centre. Blooms appear from May right through to September giving a spectacular display and scent.

The glossy green foliage then gives an Autumnal display turning golden brown shades.

Calycanthus should be planted in a sheltered shady spot with protection from winds.

What This Plant Brings to Your Garden

Fruit and spice scent

The creamy blooms give off a fragrance close to strawberry and melon with a spiced edge, carrying a little way on still summer air.

Magnolia-like white flowers

Each large flower opens from an ivory bud to near-white petals marked with burgundy and yellow at the centre, held over a long season.

Golden autumn foliage

As summer ends the glossy leaves turn warm gold and brown, a quiet closing note that extends the shrub's interest past the flowering weeks.

About This Plant

Venus came out of a breeding programme led by Dr Tom Ranney at North Carolina State University, drawing together three sweetshrub species from America and China. That mixed parentage gave it larger, paler flowers than the wild forms, closer to a small magnolia in shape than the dusky blooms its relatives carry.

Shelter from strong wind is the main thing it asks for, along with soil that stays reliably moist without turning waterlogged. Little pruning is needed beyond thinning out older wood now and then, which keeps light moving through the middle and the plant flowering freely.
