Established in Kew Gardens in 1945, this Caryopteris Kew Blue will not let you down! A reliable, robust, low maintenance, mature and hardy compact shrub that will grow in almost all conditions. A perfect edge of border addition with its compact and rounded shape of attractive, delicate, grey-green foliage which is also beautifully scented. A late flowering shrub giving an abundance of small, dark blue flowers growing up tall spikes in clusters from August to October when most other shrubs have finished. This plant really has it all and is tolerant to all weather conditions and disease. It is also a wildlife wonder, the bees and butterflies will love it! Full sun would really be appreciated to achieve maximum blooms but its not fussy about what type of soil you have as long as it drains well. This Caryopteris will grow to approximately 1 metre in height and spread but we recommend a hard prune to shape in Spring (full care instructions will be supplied). Includes 1x 3 litre Caryopteris Kew Blue

What This Plant Brings to Your Garden

Blue when others fade

Clusters of deep blue flowers open along the stems from late summer into October, bringing colour to the shrub border at a point when most shrubs have finished.

Late nectar bar

The late blooms are a magnet for bees and butterflies, offering nectar in the weeks before autumn when other sources are drying up.

Aromatic foliage

Brush past the grey-green leaves and they give off an aromatic scent, so an edge-of-path or doorway position lets you catch it as you go by.

About This Plant

The Clandon hybrids first arose in Arthur Simmonds's Surrey garden, and this seedling of one of them, 'Arthur Simmonds', was raised and named at Kew Gardens in 1945. It is a deciduous shrub, so the framework stands bare over winter before soft new shoots push out in spring and carry the flowers.

Since the flowers come on the current year's growth, cut the whole plant back hard to a low permanent framework each spring, which keeps it compact and flowering well. Sharp drainage matters most. Wet ground over winter is what usually sees it off, so heavy soils benefit from grit worked in at planting.
