New breeding of Cotinus producing wonderfully compact plants.

Cotinus Golden Lady has new growth that starts bright orange before maturing to a warm golden yellow colour.

This deciduous shrub holds this colour throughout the Summer months before taking on an orange flush in Autumn.

In Summer fluffy cream flowers appear which are highly attractive to bees and butterflies.

A fully hardy shrub that will grow happily in beds and borders or pots and containers.

Supplied as 1 x 3ltr Shrub

What This Plant Brings to Your Garden

A haze that feeds insects

In summer the airy flower plumes that give smoke bushes their name draw bees and butterflies before fading to the smoky haze over the foliage.

Colour that keeps moving

The rounded leaves open bright orange, settle to warm golden yellow for the summer, then flush orange again in autumn, so the colour keeps shifting.

Copes with dry, poor soil

Once its roots take hold it shrugs off dry summers and thrives in poor or chalky soils, colouring most brightly in an open sunny position.

About This Plant

Golden Lady is a recent smoke bush from the French breeder Minier, selected around 2016 for its neat, rounded shape and glowing foliage. New shoots emerge a fiery orange before mellowing to golden yellow, held right through the warm months, then the whole bush takes on an orange cast as autumn arrives.

Its compact frame means it rarely needs shaping, though a light prune in early spring keeps the habit tidy and encourages the brightest young leaves. Golden and yellow-leaved shrubs can scorch in fierce sun on thin soil, so give the roots a mulch to hold a little moisture through summer.
