A must have plant for the Winter garden!

Witch Hazel gives a spectacular display in January and February, and also has the most fabulous scent!

Bearing spidery blooms on bare stems in January and Febraury this fully hardy, deciduous shrub truly knows how to cheer up the Winter garden. Flowers are a deep red colour.

In Autumn it comes into its own once again when the green foliage turns vibrant shades of yellow, orange and red.

Growing to around 300cm height and spread it is best planted in a sunny or partially shaded spot. RHS Award of Garden Merit.

What This Plant Brings to Your Garden

Holds an RHS award

Given the RHS Award of Garden Merit, this witch hazel is judged among the best of the red-flowered forms for garden performance.

Scent on cold air

The spidery winter flowers give off a sweet fragrance that drifts on still, cold days, so plant it near a path or door where it will be noticed.

Fiery autumn foliage

Before the leaves fall the green foliage turns rich yellow, orange and red, so the shrub earns its place twice, in autumn as well as deep winter.

About This Plant

This red witch hazel was raised at the Kalmthout Arboretum in Belgium, home of the de Belder family whose work gave gardeners many of the finest intermedia hybrids. It carries clawed, ribbon-like petals of deep red on bare stems in the depths of winter, one of the reddest of its kind and slow to build into a broad, vase-shaped shrub.

It wants a fertile, free-draining soil and dislikes both shallow chalk and waterlogged ground, so choose the site with care. Little pruning is needed, only shaping in spring after flowering, and any suckers rising from the base should be removed promptly before they take over.
