Compact form of the hugely popular Vanilla Fraise.

Perfect for smaller spaces or container gardening - Sundae Fraise is a paniculata type Hydrangea bearing ice-cream cone shaped flower heads.

The flowers on Sundae Fraise start off creamy white before turning pink with age and then finishing with a flourish of red.

Red stems add an extra level of interest to this hardy, deciduous shrub which flowers from June to September and will reach 120cm height, 150cm spread.

What This Plant Brings to Your Garden

Three colours in one

Each cone opens greenish white, flushes pink from the base up as summer goes on, then deepens to dusty red before the leaves drop.

Cut and dried

The panicles last well in fresh arrangements and can be dried whole, holding their form and faded pink-red through the winter months indoors.

Made for small gardens

A compact panicle type, it earns a spot in a modest border or a large container where its full-sized cousins would crowd everything out.

About This Plant

Jean Renault raised this at his family's nursery in western France as a smaller version of Vanille Fraise, the variety that made strawberry-pink panicle hydrangeas popular. It picked up a silver medal at Plantarium in 2010. The shorter cones and neat frame are the whole reason it exists, and reddish-brown stems hold the heads upright.

How deep the final red turns depends on your soil and how much sun the plant gets. Flowering happens on wood made the same year, which keeps pruning easy: leave the spent heads standing over winter for protection, then in late February or early March cut last year's growth back to a low, permanent framework of stubby branches.
