Smothered with flowers describes this hydrangea habit.
Buds begin to form in May opening in June to flat panicles of cluster buds which cover the plant all summer long. The petals change as they age giving a multi coloured effect. Flowers are initially greeny white, then change to creamy yellow to pink, finishing with an intense pinky red.
This compact variety grows to 80cm tall and spread of 100cm and is perfect for front of border or container as a show piece on your balcony

What This Plant Brings to Your Garden

First paniculata into flower

Polestar is among the earliest panicle hydrangeas to bloom, with buds showing in late May and full heads by the end of June.

Fits a balcony pot

One of the smallest paniculata varieties bred to date, it stays neat in a container, bringing shrub-scale flower to balconies and doorsteps.

Takes full sun

Where mophead hydrangeas scorch, this paniculata type sits comfortably in an open, sunny spot, and colours up more strongly for the light.

About This Plant

A.J. Bregman, working at Benthuizen in the Netherlands, selected Polestar and registered it under the breeder code 'Breg14'. The aim was miniature scale without miniature flowers, and the result shrugs off winters near minus 30 degrees, far colder than any British garden will see.

Each spring, shorten all stems to about 20cm above the ground, cutting to plump buds; flowering wood grows fresh every year. Pot-grown plants appreciate a soil-based compost and steady moisture, so stand the container where you can reach it easily with a watering can through July.
