Striking flowers and foliage on this unusual Hydrangea.

There are so many reasons to grow this fabulous Hydrangea in the garden its hard to know where to start! Huge American Oak shaped leaves are not only dramatic in their size and shape for a Hydrangea but they also give a spectacular display of Autumn colour in shades of bronze, orange and red.

The flowers are also a sight to behold - cones of star shaped blooms start creamy-white then mature to pink and then maroon. Flowering from June to August.

A fully hardy shrub that is more compact in size than other varieties. Plant in full sun or partial shade.

Supplied as 1 x 3ltr shrub

What This Plant Brings to Your Garden

Autumn fire in the leaves

The big oak-shaped leaves turn bronze, orange and deep red as nights cool, some of the best autumn colour any hydrangea can give.

Cones of starry flowers

Upright cones of star-shaped florets open creamy white in June, then age through pink to a deep maroon that lasts into autumn.

Compact for an oakleaf

More restrained than most oak-leaved hydrangeas, it suits smaller gardens and large pots while still bringing that dramatic transatlantic foliage.

About This Plant

Hydrangea quercifolia grows wild through the woodlands of the American South, from Georgia across to Mississippi, and this species carries its heritage in every oak-shaped leaf. The Hovaria name comes from the Hofstede nursery at Huissen in the Netherlands, the family firm whose selections all carry that trademark.

Older stems develop peeling cinnamon bark, worth seeing in winter once the leaves have dropped. Flower buds sit on the previous year's growth, so limit pruning to a light tidy after flowering, and give the roots sharp drainage; winter wet does more harm here than cold ever will.
