Unique flowers and dark green foliage.

A fully hardy, evergreen shrub, Kalmia Sterntaler bears pink buds which open to uniquely shaped, maroon flowers with pale pink markings from June through to August.

These low maintenance shrubs are super easy to grow and care for but do prefer an acidic soil, so we recommend using ericaceous compost or adding Sulphur Soil at the time of planting.

Kalmia Sterntaler is a compact shrub with a nice habit and will grow to around 100cm height and spread.

What This Plant Brings to Your Garden

Star flowers in high summer

Maroon, star-shaped blooms edged in pale pink carry colour into the middle of summer, when many spring shrubs have long finished.

Sixty flowers per cluster

A single flower head can hold up to sixty blooms, laying on a generous supply of nectar for bees through the summer weeks.

Winter structure

Narrow, glossy evergreen leaves hold their colour through the cold months, giving the border shape and substance long after the flowers fade.

About This Plant

Dr Karl-Heinz Hubbers raised Sterntaler in Germany in 2001, crossing two older laurels named Ginkona and Mitternacht. Its name nods to a Grimm fairy tale about a child rewarded with silver coins, a hint at the star-shaped flowers, which carry a deep maroon band inside a pale rim and can number sixty to a cluster.

The glossy, narrow leaves stay put all winter, giving the plant weight in the garden long after flowering. Plant into acidic soil with ericaceous compost or sulphur, keep the roots mulched and never let them dry out in summer. Trimming away the faded heads tidies the shrub and feeds next year's display.
