Cottage garden favourite.

I'll never forget the lilacs growing in my elderly neighbours garden.

As a child we used to sit on deckchairs in the summer shade given by these and eat choc ices whilst their magnificent and intoxicating floral scent drifted around us.

Their lilacs were lilac in colour.

This lilac is a beauty with a scent to match those from my childhood days yet with tightly packed clusters of white double petaled flowers from yellow buds. Their light green heart shaped leaves turn red, orange and then golden in autumn before falling for winter dormancy.

Lilacs are officially know as their latin name Syringa vulgaris.

Supplied as a 3 litre shrub which is approximately 50cm tall

What This Plant Brings to Your Garden

Scent on the evening air

The double white trusses give off a rich, carrying fragrance that drifts across a garden on warm May evenings, filling a patio or seating area.

Nectar for bees

Bees and butterflies work the fragrant panicles through late spring, drawn to one of the richest nectar sources of the lilac season.

Holds an RHS award

The Royal Horticultural Society gives this old French lilac its Award of Garden Merit, a sign of reliable performance in British gardens.

About This Plant

Victor Lemoine, a nurseryman in Nancy, introduced this double white lilac in 1890 and named it for his wife Marie, who did much of the delicate hand-pollinating behind his famous French lilacs. Creamy buds open to tightly packed, fully double florets, and the heart-shaped leaves take on red and gold before they fall.

It settles almost anywhere with decent drainage and rewards a little attention. Prune straight after the flowers fade, since next year's buds form on the current season's growth, and pull off any suckers rising from the base to keep the shrub shapely. Deadheading spent trusses steers energy back into flower.
