Pink, Japanese Pussy Willow.

This wonderful Salix bears the most amazing fluffy pink catkins which is an absolute joy to behold in the garden.

The pink flowers are so tactile they are impossible to resist when you see them in the garden.  Not only do they put on a fabulous show outside but they also make a striking addition to cut flower arrangements too.

This fully hardy, deciduous shrub is low maintenance and fuss free, ideally suited to a sunny spot in the garden, plant in either containers or borders.

Flowering from April to May each year, this fantastic shrub will reach around 150cm height and spread.

What This Plant Brings to Your Garden

Pink spring catkins

Soft rosy-pink catkins cover the bare stems in early spring, expanding and turning silvery grey as their yellow pollen ripens.

Early pollen for bees

The pollen-laden catkins open when forage is scarce, giving emerging bumblebees and honeybees an important feed at winter's end.

RHS Award of Garden Merit

This willow carries the RHS Award of Garden Merit, chosen for its striking catkins and its easy, dependable habit.

About This Plant

Salix gracilistyla 'Mount Aso' was raised by a cut-flower grower in Japan, and its branches still fill vases every spring. The arching stems carry narrow bluish-grey leaves, silky beneath, that follow the catkins and give the shrub a soft grey haze through the summer.

An annual or occasional March prune keeps stems young and multiplies the following year's catkin count, and cutting the whole plant hard every few years holds its size. Willows are thirsty, so keep it on ground that stays reliably moist and never lets the roots dry out.
