Sweetly scented blooms.

This evergreen shrub bears a mass of spidery, creamy-white blooms each year from December to March which then go on to form attractive berries.

The gorgeous flowers not only look amazing but also smell amazing too with a wonderful vanilla scent!

Glossy, dark green, evergreen foliage give this wonderful, low maintenance shrub year round interest and is ideal for pots and containers or beds and borders.

What This Plant Brings to Your Garden

Winter vanilla scent

The small cream flowers throw a strong vanilla fragrance that travels several feet on cold still air, well before most shrubs stir.

Thrives in dry shade

It settles happily under trees and against shaded walls, filling the difficult dry corners where many shrubs sulk or fail outright.

Berries follow the flowers

Glossy black berries ripen after flowering to feed birds, while the early blooms give foraging bees a rare source of winter nectar.

About This Plant

Sweet box takes its botanical name, Sarcococca hookeriana, from the Victorian botanist Sir Joseph Hooker, and grows wild across the Himalaya from Nepal into western China. In the garden it forms a quiet thicket of glossy dark leaves, sending up its spidery flowers in the depths of winter along the previous season's stems.

It spreads slowly by suckers into a low clump, so it rewards patience rather than quick effect. The plant asks for little, wanting only a spring mulch to hold moisture at the roots and the odd trim after flowering to keep its outline neat and dense.
