A spring flowering shrub with an abundance of golden yellow hanging 'claws' tinged with green from April.
A woody shrub that is hardy in most areas of the UK that thrives in free draining soils and sunny sheltered sites. Hardy to minus 5 degrees C and can be hardier still if its feet are not wet.
Typical tree shaped framework with trailing long leaf stalks carrying up to 40 pairs of small rounded leaves which are kept all year round apart from in the coldest of winters.
Prune sparingly. Only remove frost damaged branches in late spring early summer.

What This Plant Brings to Your Garden

Golden spring flowers

Golden yellow flowers hang in claw-shaped clusters with long protruding anthers, bringing colour to a sheltered wall while much of the garden is still waking.

Evergreen through winter

Rows of small rounded leaflets, up to forty pairs on a single stalk, stay on the plant through all but the hardest winters for fine year-round texture.

RHS Award of Garden Merit

The Award of Garden Merit from the RHS marks it as reliable in gardens, a distinction earned through trials for garden performance and constitution.

About This Plant

Sophora belongs to the pea family, and this evergreen selection carries the airy, fern-like foliage that gives the group much of its appeal. Sun King was chosen as a hardier, free-flowering form, better suited to British conditions than the tender kowhai species of New Zealand from which the group descends.

Growth is slow and asks for little cutting, so the main job is patience while the woody framework builds. Any branches caught by frost can be taken off once the risk has passed in early summer. Give it the warmest, most sheltered corner you can offer, with sharp drainage at the roots to keep winter wet away.
