Fragrant, compact and slow growing.

A compact lilac for smaller spaces. The Korean Lilac has strongly scented panicles of pinky, purple flowers in summer.

A deciduous shrub so looks superb underplanted with spring flowering bulbs which fade as the dark green rounded leaves of the lilac grow.

Remove spent flower heads to tidy the plant and apply an annual granular feed in spring.

What This Plant Brings to Your Garden

Holds the RHS award

The Korean lilac carries the RHS Award of Garden Merit, a mark that it performs reliably in ordinary British gardens without fuss.

Scent for small spaces

Panicles of pinky purple flowers throw a strong lilac fragrance that carries across a patio or towards a doorway on warm early summer air.

Happy in a pot

Its compact, slow habit suits a large container by a seating area, so the scent reaches you where others need a full border to earn their place.

About This Plant

Syringa meyeri traces back to a plant found in a Beijing garden by the collector Frank Meyer in the early twentieth century, and 'Palibin' is the neat, dwarf form grown ever since. It belongs to the olive family, cousin to jasmine and privet.

The rounded dark green leaves follow the flowers and hold the shape through summer, which is why spring bulbs planted beneath work so well. Deadheading the faded panicles keeps it looking tidy, and a granular feed each spring is really all the attention it asks for.
