Exceptionally pretty and very unusual Iris.

This clump forming perennial is highly unusual and incredibly pretty. Strap like variegated foliage is green and cream and is eye-catching in its own right.

Orchid like white/pale lavender with purple and yellow markings appear from May through to June atop long stems.

This fully hardy plants reaches around 50cm height and spread and can be planted in beds and borders or pots and containers.

What This Plant Brings to Your Garden

Foliage that earns its keep

The leaves are striped cream and green and stand in a stiff fan, giving the border shape and interest for months after the flowers have gone.

Unusual orchid-like blooms

The flowers lie flat and open rather than standing upright, pale lavender over white with a yellow crest and fine purple veining at the throat.

Copes with dry ground

Once its roots settle it shrugs off dry spells, thriving in free-draining soil and gravel where thirstier perennials struggle, and it sits happily in a container.

About This Plant

The species is the Japanese roof iris, once planted along the ridges of thatched roofs in Japan where its roots helped hold the thatch together. 'Cruella' is the variegated form, and it forms a slow, tidy clump rather than running about. Settled plants send up a steady succession of blooms over several weeks, each one lasting only a day or two.

Drainage counts for more than rich feeding. Set the rhizome so its top sits level with the soil surface and keep mulch clear of it, or it will rot in a wet spell. Slugs go for the soft young leaves in spring, so watch for them early. Lift and divide the clump every three or four years to keep it flowering freely.
