Fragrant, trumpet shaped blooms.

This collection contains two varieites of Crinum Lilly, grown for their large trumpet shaped flowers which are born on tall stems above strap like green foliage. Plant in a sunny, sheltered spot.

Powellii has large pink flowers whilst Album bears large pure white flowers, both have a lovely fragrance.

Plants will flower in August to September each year and will reach around 120cm in height with a spread of aroud 40cm. Plant in a sunny, sheltered spot.

What This Plant Brings to Your Garden

Fragrance on the air

Large trumpet flowers carry a sweet fragrance in late summer, strong enough to reach you from a few steps down a warm border.

Pink and white, late

Blooms arrive in August and September when much of the border is tiring, pairing pink and pure white on tall bare stems.

Settles in a hot spot

Given a hot, sunny spot the bulbs settle in for years, building into ever larger clumps that need little disturbing once planted.

About This Plant

Crinum x powellii is a Victorian hybrid, raised from two South African species, Crinum bulbispermum and Crinum moorei, and named for C. B. Powell, who brought it into cultivation in the 1850s. This pairing sets the deep pink original alongside its white form, Album, so one planting gives two tones from the same reliable parentage.

The strappy foliage appears in spring and the flower stems push up bare once the season turns. Plant the large bulbs with the neck sitting just above the soil, keep them out of waterlogged ground, and watch young growth for slugs. Left undisturbed, the clumps flower more freely each year.
