Impressive foliage plants that put on a stunning display.

We were blown away when we saw these in trials this year and simply couldn't resist!

Melianthus Antonows Blue has the most stunning foliage in blue green. The large and textured leaves form an almost ball shape on the stem and are simply irresistible to touch. The leaves have a sweet fragrance when crushed too.

In good summers, maroon coloured flowers appear which have a honey like scent, giving this plant its common name of the Honey Bush. After flowering, large papery seeds pods appear.

Plants will grow to around 300cm height and 200cm spread but can be cut back hard every few year to ensure a constant supply of large, healthy foliage.

What This Plant Brings to Your Garden

Peanut and honey scent

Crush a leaf and it gives off a sweet smell, often likened to peanut butter, and the summer flowers add a heavier honey scent that names the plant.

Cool blue foliage

Large, deeply cut leaves in cool grey-blue arch out from the stems, holding their colour and bold texture from spring right through to the frosts.

Nectar for insects

In a warm summer the dark red flower spikes carry so much nectar that bees and other insects work them steadily through the day.

About This Plant

Melianthus major grows wild in the Western Cape of South Africa, on rocky slopes and along stream banks. 'Antonow's Blue' is a selection made by the Seattle plantsman Steve Antonow, picked out for foliage a cooler, greyer blue than the ordinary form. Each leaf splits into many toothed leaflets, the edges cut as sharply as a bread knife.

Sharp drainage matters more than anything. Winter wet sitting around the crown does far more harm than cold, so give it free-draining ground where water never stands. Every second or third spring, cut the whole plant back to a few buds near the base, since old stems flop and the leaves shrink. Plants arrive small, so allow a season to settle in.
