What This Plant Brings to Your Garden

RHS Award of Garden Merit

This nemorosa salvia holds the RHS Award of Garden Merit, given after trials for reliable performance in ordinary British gardens.

Bees and butterflies

The nectar rich violet spikes pull in bees and butterflies from midsummer, and stand among the busiest plants in a sunny border.

A second flush

Cut the faded spikes back after the first show and the clump answers with a fresh wave of flowers to carry colour on.

About This Plant

East Friesland, correctly Salvia nemorosa 'Ostfriesland', is a German selection of a wild meadow sage native to central Europe and western Asia. Its name points to the East Frisia region. The plant dies down completely each autumn, then sends up new basal growth in spring that builds into a dense mound of upright spikes.

Lift and divide congested clumps every few years in spring to keep the flowering strong. The stems are self supporting and need no canes, though an over rich soil can cause floppy growth, so hold back on heavy feeding and let the crown sit at soil level.
