Acers are hugely popular ornamental shrubs due to their fantastically showy foliage and Acer Flamingo is certainly no exception!

The variegated pinnate leaves start off pink in spring turning green with white and pink markings in the summer. Clusters of yellow/green flowers appear in spring to compliment the foliage beautifully and enhance the unusual impact this Acer offers.

Growing to approximately 1.5 meters tall in 5 years means this Acer is a perfect architectural shrub for smaller gardens, beds and borders but it would also be perfectly happy in a planter, making a wonderful statement on your patio or balcony. Simply prune to shape and feed twice a year with a slow release fertiliser.

This Acer Flamingo measures approximately 40-50cm in height on receipt

*Note this is a deciduous shrub so will not have leaves in winter

What This Plant Brings to Your Garden

RHS Garden Merit holder

Holder of the RHS Award of Garden Merit since 1993, judged a dependable garden performer under British growing conditions.

Foliage in three colours

New leaves emerge flushed pink, then settle to soft green splashed with white, so the colour keeps shifting from spring to leaf fall.

Spring food for insects

Clusters of yellow-green flowers appear in spring, offering forage for bees while many trees and shrubs are still bare.

About This Plant

Box elders are North American maples with divided, ash-like leaves, unusual in a genus better known for palmate foliage. Flamingo, the pink-variegated form, was selected in the Netherlands by J. Bastiaanse in 1976 and quickly became a nursery favourite across Europe for its speed and easy temper.

It thrives on hard treatment. Cutting the stems back in late winter produces larger leaves with stronger pink and white markings, which is why many gardeners keep it as a pruned shrub rather than letting it run up into a tree. Remove any plain green shoots promptly before they take over.
