Very unusual Acer with great colour and unique foliage!

Acer Starfish is a simply stunning variety of Acer that really is quite unique. The leaves on this fabulous plant have curved edges and are held on the stem in such a fashion that they really do look very much like a Starfish!

As you would expect from an Acer, the display doesn't stop there! New foliage stars red/purple before then taking on a fiery scarlet colour in Autumn.

Plant in full sun or partial shade, in either pots and containers or beds and borders. Plants will grow to around 200cm height 75cm spread.

Leaves like starfish

Curled, downward-cupped lobes give every leaf the look of a starfish, an oddity that draws comment all summer long.

Fiery autumn finale

Deep maroon summer foliage turns bright crimson in autumn, one of the strongest late displays you can fit into a small garden.

An upright, narrow habit means it slots into a courtyard corner or a generous container without ever crowding its neighbours.

About This Plant

Dutch nurseryman Piet Vergeldt raised this maple, one of many introductions carrying the Peve prefix he coined from his own name. New growth opens bright red before settling to deep maroon, and each fresh flush through the season repeats that red against the darker older leaves.

Its needs are those of any Japanese maple: shelter from harsh, drying winds, soil that holds moisture yet drains freely, and a mulch each spring to keep the roots cool. Shaping is best done in the dormant season, and only lightly, since the habit is naturally neat.
