A low growing spreading habit

Ideal for ground covering this conifer has a multi-branched spreading habit that grows in horizontal layers.

The branches are densely covered with needle like foliage. In spring the new foliage is light green slowly fading to deep green and remains all year round. The foliage is dense completely covering the soil making a great weed suppressant too.

A great garden variety having won an Award of Garden Merit from the Royal Horticultural Society requiring little-to-none annual maintenance being slow growing and easy care.

Supplied as a 4.5 litre pot grown plant which is approximately 15cm high and 30cm spread.

What This Plant Brings to Your Garden

Complete weed cover

The densely needled branches lie in flat, overlapping layers that cover the soil completely, leaving little room for weeds to gain a foothold.

Takes coastal exposure

As a shore juniper it takes sandy soil and coastal exposure in its stride, holding on where salt winds would scorch softer plants.

RHS award holder

Holds the RHS Award of Garden Merit, chosen for its dependable growth and its easy, low yearly upkeep.

About This Plant

The shore juniper grows wild on the sandy coasts of Japan, and 'Schlager' is a low, wide-spreading form of it. Fresh needles emerge a soft light green in spring before deepening to a darker shade that lasts through the rest of the year, laid along branches that grow in horizontal tiers.

It grows slowly and asks for almost no cutting back once established. Plant it on ground that drains freely, as waterlogged soil is the one condition it will not accept, and water through the first season while it roots. After that it largely looks after itself, filling out a little more year on year.
