A stunning, statement piece! Acers are loved by many due to their exquisite foliage and the colour changing leaves of Atropurpureum will undoubtedly get heads turning.

Also referred to as Purple Japanese Maple, these small, bushy, trees display elegant, rich purple foliage with deep lobes throughout the Spring and Summer turning scarlet red as they age in the Autumn before falling.

Petite red/purple flowers appear in the Spring, occasionally followed by small fruits and this slow growing tree can reach heights of 4-8 metres but over many many years.

This Acer would prefer a little shelter from the cold, strong winds but on the whole, it is pretty low maintenance and as always, care instructions will be included.

Supplied as an established plant in a 3 litre pot, this Acer Atropurpureum measures approximately 25-30cm on receipt

What This Plant Brings to Your Garden

Purple leaves all summer

Deeply lobed foliage holds its rich purple from the first spring flush right through summer, far darker than the common green-leaved maples.

Scarlet before the fall

As nights cool the purple leaves turn scarlet, one of the surest autumn displays a small garden tree can give.

Small flowers, winged seeds

Little red-purple blooms in spring lead on to winged seed pairs that spin down in autumn, a quiet extra most passers-by miss.

About This Plant

Atropurpureum simply means dark purple in Latin, a name attached to purple-leaved seedlings of the Japanese maple for well over a century. The species grows wild in the hills of Japan, Korea and eastern China, and centuries of selection there shaped the fine, layered branching gardeners prize today.

Two jobs matter. Site it out of cold, drying winds, which scorch the thin leaves, and keep the roots evenly moist under a spring mulch of bark or leaf mould. Beyond removing dead wood it is best left unpruned, as the tree finds its own graceful shape unaided.
