Extra large panicles of flower!

Hydrangea Bonfire has strong stems which are perfect for supporting the extra large cone shaped blooms.

Flower heads are densely packed, opening to reveal white blooms tinged lime green.  As flowers matures they turn shades of light pink gradually moving to a rich deeper pink colour.

A fully hardy, low maintenance, deciduous shrub that will perform for many years in the garden. reaching an eventual height and spread of around 120cm.

Leave the faded blooms on for winter interest, they look lovely with a bit of frost on them! Hard prune in spring to a good set of buds 2 up from the base of the plant this helps keep your plant fresh and its size in check.

What This Plant Brings to Your Garden

Extra-large panicles

Big, densely packed cones open lime-tinged white and move through pink to a deep, rich shade as the season goes on.

Draws in pollinators

The small fertile flowers within each head bring foraging bees and hoverflies close, adding movement to the border on warm days.

Winter frost interest

Left standing, the spent flower heads hold their shape into winter and look their best rimed with frost on cold mornings.

About This Plant

Guido Rouwette, a Dutch breeder, is behind this variety, which took a Bronze award at GrootGroenPlus in 2022. Its strength lies in the stems, which stay stiff enough to carry the unusually heavy heads without bowing, so the plant needs no staking or propping through the flowering season.

It asks little once planted and settles into most fertile, moist soils. The one job that matters comes in spring, when a hard prune down to two buds above the base keeps the shrub compact and pushes out fresh, free-flowering wood. It also does well grown in a large container.
