A mature, reliable, hardy, compact and bushy evergreen shrub that is not fussed about where it is planted and will give you colour all year round.

The dark, evergreen leaves allow the autumn buds to take centre stage in September/October. The maturing buds will turn claret red as the temperature falls, blooming into clusters of pretty pink and white flowers from mid-winter through until mid-spring.

This already established, busy Viburnum doesn't stop there, once it has finished flowering, dark blue berries will form making a perfect snack for the birds and wildlife in your garden.

Growing to approximately 2 metres in height and spread in 5-10 years, this shrub will thrive in sun, shade or a mixture of both and can be pruned but they do naturally form a lovely shape so pruning is not needed every year, maybe just snipping of any parts that have got carried away.

Full care instructions will be supplied with the plant.

Supplied as a 4.5 litre pot grown Shrub approximately 30cm high.

What This Plant Brings to Your Garden

Berries the birds want

After flowering, clusters of deep metallic-blue berries ripen and feed blackbirds and thrushes through the leaner weeks of the year.

Flowers through winter

From autumn's carmine buds come starry white blooms that carry on opening through winter, offering pollinators nectar when the borders are otherwise bare.

Grows where others sulk

Salt wind, deep shade or an exposed corner suits this evergreen, which holds glossy leaf cover in the spots that defeat fussier shrubs.

About This Plant

This laurustinus was selected at Wakehurst Place in Sussex during the early twentieth century and named after the lady of the house. It carries the RHS Award of Garden Merit. Left alone it builds a dense, rounded evergreen with leathery dark leaves, and the maturing buds turn claret as temperatures drop.

The habit is naturally tidy, so it rarely needs the shears; a light trim to take out any stem that has run away keeps the shape, and that job is best left until flowering finishes. Growth is steady rather than fast, and old berries often still hang on as the next season's buds begin to colour.
