The bright orange leaves emerge in spring on its delicate looking branches. Fading to a light green with pink key line margin as the summer progresses. In autumn its leaves turn a fiery orange before falling leaving its woody framework in winter.
Japanese acers are not difficult to grow all they require acidic soil, or for pots ericaceous compost, a part sunny site away from direct summer sun and shelter from cold drying winds which scorch their delicate foliage.
Japanese acers are slow growing plants that reward you with year after year of colourful foliage which gently sways in a light breeze.

What This Plant Brings to Your Garden

Holds the RHS AGM

Holder of the RHS Award of Garden Merit, chosen by trial judges for reliable colour and a good constitution in British gardens.

Colour across three seasons

New leaves open apricot orange with a pink edge, settle to green in summer, then burn orange again in autumn before falling.

Made for containers

Slow growth and a compact, layered branch framework suit it to a large pot or a sheltered corner of a small garden.

About This Plant

The name borrows from the katsura tree, whose emerging leaves share the same soft apricot tone. It belongs to the Japanese maples, a group long selected in Japan for the fineness of their foliage. Growth is unhurried, and the plant carries its leaves on slender branches that shift in the lightest breeze.

Wind causes more trouble than cold. Dry spring easterlies scorch the leaf margins brown, so a spot with shelter from a wall or taller shrubs pays off. Grown in a container, it wants ericaceous compost and, in hard water areas, rainwater. Pruning is minimal, since the plant sits in group one, so limit any cutting to dead wood.
