The Smoke Bush.

Grace has small pink - purple flowers in late summer which are borne on the bush as if smoke was arising from its branches hence its common name.

Purple elongated leaves develop in spring from brown straight stems which turn fiery shades of red and orange in autumn before falling.

Looking stunning with silver leaved shrubs or yellow bedding planted at its base showing off the colour contrast.

Easy to care for simply prune damaged stems in late winter or hard prune to ground level in late winter to stimulate next year's foliage, or remove one-third of stems in mid-spring for a display of young foliage and attractive flowers.

Supplied as a 4.5 litre pot grown plant which is approximately 30cm high.

What This Plant Brings to Your Garden

RHS award of merit

Holds the RHS Award of Garden Merit, given only to plants that prove themselves reliable performers in real garden conditions across the UK.

Long autumn fire

Purple summer leaves turn scarlet and orange through autumn, carrying colour into the season when many shrubs have already finished.

Plumes of smoke

Deep pink fruiting plumes hover over the branches from July, catching morning dew and reading like smoke from a distance.

About This Plant

Peter Dummer raised this hybrid at Hillier's Winchester nursery in the late 1970s, crossing the American Cotinus obovatus with a purple-leaved form of the Venetian sumach, and named it for his wife Grace. The parentage gives it more vigour and richer leaf colour than either parent shown alone.

Leaves emerge coppery in spring, deepen to purple through summer, then fire up before falling. Pruning is the one decision that matters: cut hard in late winter for the biggest foliage, or take out a third of the stems in spring to keep both leaves and the smoky plumes.
