It is easy to see why this stunning, architectural shrub is also referred to as the Smoke Bush as Cotinus Young Lady bears large panicles of frothy blooms which give the appearance of billowing smoke.

These beautiful pale pink/cream blooms will form throughout the Summer over light green rounded shaped leaves followed by fabulous Autumn colour when leaves turn spectacular shades of orange and red.

A low maintenance and fully hardy beauty recognised for its performance by being given the RHS award of gardens merit. Happy in a sunny or part shady position and only really needs a prune to shape if required and being a compact variety, this Young Lady is ideal in smaller gardens and pots.

Supplied as 1 Cotinus Young Lady in a 4.5 litre pot

What This Plant Brings to Your Garden

Flowers when young

Blooms freely from a young age, so the smoky plumes arrive early in the plant's life rather than after years of waiting.

Broad autumn range

Fresh green summer leaves turn shades of yellow and orange-red in autumn, a wider colour range than the purple-leaved smoke bushes manage.

RHS award, small plot

Carries the RHS Award of Garden Merit, and its compact habit suits smaller plots and large containers where a full-size shrub would crowd.

About This Plant

The purple-leaved smoke bushes rely on their foliage, while 'Young Lady' keeps rounded green leaves through the growing season and saves its drama for the flower plumes and the autumn turn. Its selling point is precocity: young plants produce the frothy heads within a season or two, where older varieties can take several years to settle.

Drought tolerance comes once the roots are established, so watering matters most in the first summer. Pruning is optional here, a light trim to shape after the leaves fall is all it needs, and heavy cutting would sacrifice the very flowers the variety was bred to produce.
